Preliminary sketch for "Dressing the Bride"

Leighton, Claire (illus.)

(c. 1935). Pencil sketch on paper of "Dressing the Bride," signed and titled by Leighton. The image, here studiously shaded in white pencil and graphite, would serve as an illustration to the 1940 Macmillan edition of Thomas Hardy's Under the Greenwood Tree. A stunning example of Leighton's skill for figure and drapery. Some toning to edges of paper as well as three dampstains, none of which impacts the image. At the bottom of the paper is the contemporary price of $40. Near fine. Held in a paper folio, on which is written, likely in Leighton's hand, "Number one. Dressing the Bride (from Under the Greenwood Tree)/$50" and Leighton's name and address. (Paper measures 18 by 12 in.; 458x305 mm). Item #31379
