California: Vernon Kilns, 1938-1940. A nine-inch bowl showing an overhead view of 1930s Manhattan from the "Our America" series designed by Kent for Vernon Kilns. The piece is decorated in a lustrous cream and brown transfer print. "Our America" had the largest number of images of any series that Kent designed. The basin of the bowl depicts the island of Manhattan, with its burgeoning skyscrapers, busy piers, and waterfront parks. The bowl follows the common theme to the series as a whole: working America. Kent's reverence for the diversity of the American landscape and for "the working man" shines through the decoration, which here, as with the entire series, is highlighted by a beautiful star-spangled border. The bottom is marked "Our America / designed by / Rockwell Kent / Vernon Kilns / Made in U.S.A." Two minor points of chipping. Otherwise, this patriotic piece of dinnerware is in fine condition.
