Jeu de Marseilles/Game of Marseilles.
(San Francisco, CA): Thomas Ingmire, 2019. A unique book, signed and dated by the artist. Ingmire has here calligraphed the eponymous poem by David Annwn, in which Annwn expounds upon the creation of the Surrealist's card deck, a project undertaken by André Breton, Max Ernst, André Masson, and others, who had been labeled by the Nazi regime as "undesirable." As the Nazi forces advanced and the "undesirable" set waited for the chance to flee, they formed the fascinating, mystical, and in some ways comedic cards. Annwn's poem seeks to evoke the passions involved in the creation of art in the face of danger; Ingmire's calligraphy and painted illustrations likewise layer bold emotional strokes with sharp colors, ungrounded shapes, familiar and unfamiliar objects, and depictions of the cards themselves, alongside references to Hegel, Freud, Picasso, and Baudelaire.
