(Pop-up Book)

A Visit to the Country. Dean's "Surprise Model" Series No. 4.

London: Dean & Son, (c. 1880). Quarto. (8)pp. Illustrated with three pop-up images, which operate with threads that run through the pages of the book. As the pages turn, the threads tense or slacken, and thus cause the overlaid illustrations to rise or fall. Throughout, text at the very top of the page instructs the reader to hold the volume firmly, place their thumbs at the marked positions, and open the book wide. The result is a series of images with more of a natural forward motion than most pop-ups, charmingly illustrating a child's letter describing her stay with her family in the countryside. Bound in cloth-backed pictorial boards. Upper cover shows areas of color restoration, corners rubbed general wear to edges. All pop-up elements functional and intact. A very good example of an uncommon Dean title. Item #31470
