Each of the twelve zinc sheets that make up this book shows a Japanese character silkscreened in red, beneath which is its English translation in cut-out letters. The sheets have been treated with vinegar, resulting in a rough, primal finish that suits the book's conceit of new life and new personality emerging from chemical nothingness. The book's total reliance on metal echoes the metal books produced by the Italian Futurists; this present collaboration between Kaldewey and Jun Suzuki (and, both authorially and stylistically, between East and West) carries Futurism's delight in the new forward into fresh territory, one that had already informed Suzuki's work and would later underlie much of Kaldewey's.
