[Handmade juvenile library with early color stipple engravings].

(France? c. 1830). Seven vols. Unpaginated. Each volume devotes its contents to a particular theme: flowers, animals, insects, the Latin alphabet, caricatured figures, professions, and landscapes. All illustrations are finely and minutely rendered, suggesting a skilled hand, early to the use of color in printed illustration arts. The volume of animals bears a manuscript title page ("Animaux"). In the volume of professions, each illustration is labeled by hand, and the trades represented include soldiers, peddlers, knitters, farmers, and a lackey, among many others both serious and comedic. The volume of landscapes features identifiable landmarks, such as the Hagia Sophia and Matterhorn. All volumes bound in green pebbled paper over boards. Some illustrations rubbed, expert repairs to some of the bindings, else near fine. Item #31673
