Confessio: Worte und Zeichen.

Wolf, Gustav (illus.)

Jena: Eugen Diedrichs, (1922). Elephant folio. (12)ff., loose, as issued. One of 250 copies, signed by Wolf in pencil on the eleven sheets of wood engravings. The engravings represent the height of Wolf's artistic vision, evincing an accomplished eye for contrast, while also drawing upon a cross-section of styles, from Art Nouveau to East Asian traditions to Surrealism. They are huge not only in format but in concept, representing emotions and landscapes at cosmic, soulful proportions. Here they accompany three poems: "The Song of the Blossom," "The Song of the Wave," and "The Song of the Simile." All three invoke the spiritualism of earthly things in order to meditate on the profundity of existence. Wolf's visionary sheets are housed in a blue paper-covered portfolio, with motif stamped in gilt to upper cover. Portfolio very toned and shows general cosmetic rubbing to extremities. Sheets remain clean and bright. Near fine. Item #31738

(von Borries H10-20).
