Light / Folds.

Song, Haein (illus.)

London: Arc Artist Editions, 2022. Octavo. (37)ff. One of twenty-six copies, signed by the artist, Haein Song. Sixteen cyanotype prints of paper foldings (jong-e-jeop-ki in Korean) give particular attention to methods of interlocking, and of opening and closing. The sixteen foldings were exposed to UV light for different lengths of time—between three and eighteen minutes—depending on the numbers of their layers, resulting in an incredible diffusion of color and saturation within each image. This equivalence between richness and translucence, along with Song's ability to render obvious the lines and layers of folds, visually guides the reader through Song's accompanying poetic meditation on memory, the physicality of remembrance, and the passing of time and light. The text of the poem is interleaved between the cyanotype prints, and is itself treated as a layering of language; the lines are printed on Zerkall and opaque Washi papers, such that when the reader turns the Washi page, some of the words, or even portions of words, vanish. A thoughtful and studious use of the codex format and cyanotype process, both of which further embed the role of repetition, cyclicality, and linearity into Song's notions of memory. Bound in a bradel-style binding of boards covered in blue cloth with a pink spine. Front cover has been blind debossed at two different pressures to show the shape of a paper folding. Housed in a matching dropback box with suede interior panels. Mint. Prospectus laid in, as well as a sheet showing process photographs. Item #31784
