Illuminations. An Acrostic Mythology.
Northampton, MA: Double Elephant Press, 2014. Octavo. Unpaginated. One of forty copies. Signed by Kuch at the colophon. Modeled after an illuminated manuscript, Kuch's delightfully morbid book presents a series of thirteen mezzotints of invented martyrs bordered by marginalia of illuminated relief-etchings. In Kuch's words, the icons "are martyred by their own enlightenment." One has is blinded by the "stigmas of vision," another is "manacled by visceral truth." The figures themselves are seen through windows on preceding pages, which act as referential and scientific borders and caption the illustrations. A colorful and incisive riff on manuscript culture and spirtuality, bound in boards covered with black paper and with copper edges. Title and skull motif in white to upper panel. Mint. Housed in dropback box. Item #31908
