(Costumes)

Uncle John's Panorama of America.

Philadelphia: C.G. Henderson, 1854. Square 24mo. leporello featuring twenty-four panels printed on recto only. The book presents a series of hand-colored wood engraved illustrations showing the native dress of the indigenous people of North and South America, with captions identifying each. The illustrations cover a significant amount of ground: from Eskimos in the north, to Hatians in the Carribbean, all the way to Tierra del Fuego; and in some cases get rather granular: for Brazil, the book includes representation from the Tupinamba, Botocoudo, and Coroado tribes. A fascinating departure from the usual costume book aimed at a juvenile audience, and fairly scarce, with only five copies held in institutional collections. Traces of finger soiling and erased pencil marks to margins; cloth-backed printed boards show slight rubbing and soiling to upper cover. Very good overall. Item #31974
