Crucifixion.

Gill, Eric (illus.)

(Ditchling): 1919. Bodycolor and graphite on paper measuring 7 1/2 by 5 inches. Initialled and dated "17.1.19" in lower right corner. The image here was originally executed by Gill in 1917 after a crucifix in the window of York Minister (see Physick 89), and bears stylistic similarities with the crucifixion scene in his Stations of the Cross at Westminster Cathedral (Physick 104), completed the following year. Gill's pencil notations, coupled with the grid into which Gill has divided the image indicate that this artwork was likely a study for an unrealized sculpture for his gallerist, William Marchant. Paper shows uniform darkening from dust-soiling, light stain along right margin, not affecting image; small pinhole at upper margin. Item #31997
