Wiegman, Jan (illus.)

Haarlem, Antwerp: De Sleutel, (1949). Octavo. (28)pp. A child's alphabet, richly illustrated by Wiegman with images to match each letter. The main picture—lumberjacks, gnomes flying a kite, polar bears going for a swim—is surrounded by others in silhouette and a two-line rhyming text, thus creating for the young learner an array of references to which to attribute a given letter. Among the illustrations are also instances of racist depictions of Black people, with a particularly flagrant feature under "N" and the inclusion of "Swarte Piet" alongside Saint Nicholas under "S." Text printed in red and black, images in black, gray, and shades of red. Wiegman's cartoons and silhouettes were hallmarks of his style, which he leant to an oeuvre of children's books, comic pages, shadow plays, and newspapers. Spiral-bound in glazed paper over boards, with a pictorial upper cover. General edgewear, mild exterior soiling, else near fine. Item #32227
