the body in question.

Hartley, Edgar, David Thomas, and Richard Turnbull (illus.)

NY: Furious Day Press, 2016. Small octavo. (8)ff accordionfold, printed on both sides. Each panel, save Turnbull's introduction and the colophon, presents the reader with a silkscreen investigating through collage and/or altered photographs the male body as artistic and historical object. The book is a collaboration between three Manhattan Graphics Center artists - Edgar Hartley, David Thomas, and Richard Turnbull - who each designed four images which appear in Turnbull-Thomas-Hartley sequence. Some of the illustrations are haunting, the original photograph having been printed with such a digression of color as to render it obscure, puzzling, and even unsettling. Others are erotic and queer, showing men in various degrees of undress and in positions traditionally associated with power or with vulnerability. Several incorporate historical images both Western and non-Western, including of Renaissance-imagined Greco-Roman men, Japanese portraits, and a Native American dancer. Bound in cloth-covered boards with interior illustration replicated in black on upper cover. Fine. Item #32236
