Two paintings of puppets depicting racist stereotypes of African-Americans.
1935-1938. Two original paintings, signed by the artist, Cherry Barr Jerry. The paintings show puppets, with chubby cheeks and mitten-hands, though these skew toward racist stereotypes in their depiction of African-American characters. Jerry was an art instructor in Racine, Wisconsin, during the Great Depression as part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project program. The paintings were part of a series of puppet designs created by the artist during this time. Two pieces housed in blue and beige matting and framed in gold. Some soiling to edges of images, minor wear to frames, else fine. (Paintings measure 16 by 13 1/2 in. [406x343mm] in 24 1/2 by 22-in. [622x559mm] frames). Item #32499
