Bart, Harriet (illus.)

(Minneapolis, MN): Mnemonic Press, 2022. Octavo. Title sheet, (11)pp. prologue, (31)ff, colophon sheet. One of 25 copies, signed by the artist. An experiment in diaristic format, recombinant structure, and mixed media illustration, Bart's response to the COVID-19 pandemic engages with and questions time as we knew it in that period of uncertainty, and as we still attempt to know it in the still-emerging aftermath of global trauma. Bart begins with a prologue booklet on which her own handwriting has been transferred by polymer plate. Here she situates the silence of isolation with "the weight of time imagined, improvised, revealed, repeated, interchangeable." That interchangeability characterizes the subsequent thirty-one sheets of illustrations, which are marked according to days one through thirty-one, but are held loosely in folios prefaced by lines from Emily Dickinson and can be mixed in any order. Elements are biological, esoteric, and politically engaged - this latter effected through pseudo-news clippings, expertly letterpressed and photo-reproduced, which attend to the Trump administration's response and the murder of George Floyd. Illustrations are created by mixed media, collage, gold leaf, photographic transfer, and graphite. Produced by Paul Nylander at Four Tree Press. All held in box designed by Jody Williams. Fine.
