Lyric Verse: A Printer's Choice.

Boston: David R. Godine, 1966. Octavo. 75pp. From an edition of 500, this is one of 40 copies printed on heavy yellow Fabriano paper, and one of the few printed entirely on the same color sheet. Godine's first book, it was suppressed at the time of publication due to copyright restrictions. A selection of poetry by 48 of history's best known poets, ranging from ancient Latin to modern American and English. The selection also includes works by important Italian and French poets. This copy is uniquely misbound; pages twenty-eight and twenty-nine appear between pages fifteen and eighteen, and pages sixteen and seventeen appear between pages twenty-seven and thirty. The text is printed in nine typefaces which complement the range and diversity of poems chosen. The colophon indicates that the copy is numbered and signed by Godine, but these elements are both missing, a contradiction apparent in most, and perhaps all, copies of this volume. Deluxe binding of Niger-backed marbled boards executed at the Harcourt Bindery in Boston. A rare Godine broadside printed with quotations from Dickens and Thomas Carlyle laid-in. Extremely fine, in original slipcase, which shows light edgewear. Item #8840
