Blueberry Surprise.

Brussels: mfc-michèle didier, 2006. Octavo. (96)pp. One of 250 copies. An entrancing yet mildly unsettling illustration of conversation, Joseph Grigely’s book presents one continuous text of 45,000 words transcribed from written conversations that the artist has been collecting for the past ten years. The transcription mimics the words’ original presentations, exactly reflecting the way Grigely, who lost his hearing at the age of ten, encountered them. Change in voice appears as change in color, but there are no other indications of who is speaking or when, where, or in what tone they speak. The result is a steady murmur, a litany of sound at once definite and indefinite, engrossing the reader in the experience of reduced or absent hearing. A rare typographic reflection on sensory loss. Bound in orange paper with a red paper dust jacket. Fine. Item #30259
